EAT

As locals who are well acquainted with the food scene here,  we decided to create  a  guide where we talk about our favorite spots and to help others keep up with the latest food news and find resources like specials and happy hours

*Our Faves:  These are the places we go to regularly and spend our own money. Nobody paid us to write about these places.
*Lists: These are a combination of our opinion and popular opinion of other locals. Nobody paid to be on the list.

Fish River Grill

Atmosphere: Self described as a "Funky Junky Redneck Joint". What started out as a little shack has grown into full size restaurants that still carry the flair and attitude of the owner. Marilyn Monroe posters, giant fish and all kinds of funky junky stuff.  Each location has its own flair.
The Service: FRG prides themselves on excellent service.  Because locals frequent the place, it doesn't go through the same ups and downs as some of the other restaurants in the area.  They maintain a fairly consistent staff that recognizes their regulars and they're always eager to welcome newbies into the Fish River Grill family.

Food: Are you in the mood for some good Southern fried cooking? You want a giant messy burger? Do you want some fried seafood with some fried green tomatoes?  How about a  Po'boy, gumbo or some crawfish pistols? This is your place.  We've yet to try something we didn't like.

The very first time we went to FRG they brought us a cup of what they call Swamp Soup. We were very suspect but, tried it.  It's so good. Sometimes, when it's cold, we'll order a gallon of it for dinner. The locals swear by it. It's good for the soul.

Our favorites to order here are:

"OMG" Shrimp Feast Po'boy: It's plenty of fried shrimp slathered with Ms. Diana's special crawfish sauce.  It was picked as
one of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die

Crawfish Pistols: It's a fried beignet with OMG crawfish sauce injected inside. Pretty sure these things should be illegal.

Seafood BLT: Fried Shrimp, Bacon, Lettuce, Fried Green Tomato, Cheese and a side of OMG crawfish sauce to spread on top.

The Hurricane Burger:
Grilled onions, Mushrooms, Bacon, Swiss, American, Jalapeños, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Mayo, Ketchup & Mustard. It's like a hurricane came through and tossed everything onto a burger.  Can you handle it?

Kids Menu: Our two boys are 7 and 9 (in 2021) and they eat a lot. The kids fried catfish plate is big enough to fill them up and at FRG, the adults can order a kid's plate too.  If you get the regular order, you're probably going to have leftovers and there's nothing wrong with that.

Cost: Very affordable.  Like we said, this is a local joint. You can get an expensive crab claw dinner if you want to but, overall the majority of the menu is budget friendly and you will not leave hungry.

Local Perspective: Some may say they're where the locals eat, Fish River Grill is the original and reigning local champion. Ms. Diana was a hairdresser until she couldn't work anymore due to an injury. She went to a Creole cooking school and started out of a small kitchen.  Since then, she has grown her special brand and recipes into multiple locations in Fairhope, Foley and Gulf Shores.  Definitely check them out.
